MISSION OF THE MONTH:
October 2011 “Kid’s Closet” The October Mission of the Month is Kid’s Closet. This program is now housed in Bethany Lutheran Church at 2308 W. 3rd St. rather than in Laura MacArthur School. Kid’s Closet provides clothing for early childhood through 5th grade children. Most families who are eligible to receive these clothing items also participate in free lunch programs or have some special need such as joblessness, fire displacement, recent move, military call-up, etc. Children are given one complete new outfit and up to three outfits of gently used clothing in the fall. They may also come back in spring to receive appropriate seasonal clothing. 1,029 youngsters were served in fall of 2010 and 275 came back in spring of 2010 for more clothing. Items most needed are warm coats, hats & mittens, along with new and gently used children’s clothing suitable for school in sizes to fit K thru 5th graders. No boots or shoes please. Early childhood sized clothing is also welcome since younger siblings are often outfitted along with their school-aged siblings. Donations should be placed in the big blue bin in the north narthex. Checks can be made to Glen Avon Presbyterian Church with Kid’s Closet in the memo line. The chilly weather in recent days reminds us that coats, scarves and mittens will be needed very soon! We want to make sure to do our part in keeping the children in our community toasty as they go to school and play outside. Please give generously! ******
Don’t forget to save
your Campbell’s soup labels and the Boxtops for Education labels from
various food items. Put them in the designated metal box on the kitchen
counter. And please keep in mind that all of our various “Missions of the
Month” are places of need all year. We can each continue giving to any of
them during the course of the year. If you find yourself with extra items of
clothing or household goods, these missions might need them.
2 Cor. 9:7 “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.” NRSV
