“Serving
from the Heart”
Rev. Lon Weaver
The 12th
chapter of I Corinthians describes a reality that is a key element of all
faithful ministry. That foundation is God’s gift to us of talents and skills:
“Now
there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are
varieties of services, but the same Lord; and
there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of
them in everyone. To
each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
(I Corinthians
12:4-7)
Here at Glen
Avon, we have the great opportunity to reflect on those gifts. An eight-week
course entitled, Serving from the Heart, is taking place at 10:15 on
Sunday mornings for eight weeks. An additional opportunity for taking the course
will occur after that. Guided by this material, participants will think and pray
about their interests and their skills, their personality traits and possible
ministries where those traits are crucial. We trust that these sessions will be
times of revelation for those who come, that doorways to new paths of service
will be revealed, that windows to hidden potential will be thrown wide open. In
short, we believe that this is an exciting opportunity for all members and
friends of Glen Avon to seek out the latest chapter in our adventure of faith,
in collaboration with the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, this
is an invitation which we extend to all to dig deep into the clear as well as
the hidden potential within us. In John’s gospel we hear these words attributed
to Jesus: “‘The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but
you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who
is born of the Spirit.’” (3:8) Who knows in what direction the wind of the Holy
Spirit will blow, and who knows on what path it will push you along? Take this
opportunity to find out! Amen.
