"Is there any word from God today?"

Rev. Robyn Weaver

That’s a question heard often in our world . Is God present at all today?

Some modern people say that they never hear God saying anything to them. Some speak of

God as the one who hides and is absent from the world. In our age of bombardment by communication and conversation through technology, advertisement , television, and video is it any wonder that it can be tough to hear God amidst the cacophony ?

To us comes the stories of Pentecost and the rush of a mighty wind that changed the view of

conversation with God forever. Assuming that the bible testimony is true then our God is One

who relentlessly, and unceasingly speaks. There is something about our God that loves to be in relationship to humanity. That something is love.

One sure sign that two people are in love is that they long to be with one another. They want to talk

with each other by telephone, email, face to face, at all hours. They listen, give and receive, sharing

of themselves.

At Pentecost the Holy Spirit flowed upon those gathered and waiting in Jerusalem. The Spirit fell upon ordinary people and suddenly they knew the presence of God was with them.

Thus in the conversation, through prayer and worship, they heard the call to tell all Jerusalem, and far beyond, the glorious news that God lives and speaks . God let loose in the world acting out of love. Those gathered could not contain themselves. They had spoken to and been heard by the living God.

And the news spread “ all Jerusalem knows” so the great council reported. Acts 4:16

This is about a relationship between loved ones. Out of love God listens. Because God loves us enough to speak to us, we can speak to God. Amazingly, God listens to us!

Often we have no words to express our deepest fears, tragedies, dreams, and hopes. Still God listens to hear our silent concerns. God hears and knows our innermost thoughts and the Spirit comes to interpret,

to intercede for us. The Spirit comes to enable….to guard…to encourage…to stop our senseless irresponsible talk…to enable….to us to listen and hear the Lovers voice. Then the spirit comes to empower us to act on what we hear and learn.

Like a true diplomat the spirit

gets us to the table so we can talk, and listen, and wait for the gifts of God that come with being in Gods

presence. This Pentecost let us celebrate our relational, ever speaking God. The One who is not silent

but is vocal and speaking in our world today. Have you heard the word of our God today?
